What I Have Learned

I'm taking a moment from making flowers to write this post that just came to me. Sometimes this is how blog posts work! This will be my second full year on Etsy. When I started out, I only knew two things. I loved the Etsy site and I wanted to become a seller on this site. Did I really know what I wanted to sell? No, really no clue. I thought at first it would be baby blankets. I love fabrics and matching up prints. The market is flooded with these items though. I wanted to stand out. One day I bought some vintage bias tape. I loved the feel of it. I tried to make a flower out of it. I probably spent a whole day getting it to where I wanted it at that time. I have since improved my design. After making over one thousand flowers, that's what happens. One day a lovely customer requested a pillow made into a ring bearer pillow. It got me thinking of a design that could be personalized. It has become my bestseller today. If someone would have told me that I would be selling mostly wedding items on etsy, I wouldn't have believed them. I have to say though, I am honored every time I get a request from a bride to make something for her wedding. Such a meaningful day and my little item is included. Truly gets me emotional. When I was growing up my family had a Sears Catalogue Store. My grandfather had an Antique shop in the same building. I spent hours each day working with both shops. I never knew that what I was doing then would benefit my shop today. Here's how they relate to my etsy shop jadiecakes.

1)Customer service is number ONE. Be pleasant, helpful, and respond to their request in a timely manner. If not, you may lose a sale. When a package came in the morning off the Sears truck, we had to hurry and unload it and then call the customer. If you do offer excellent customer service there is a possibility of the customer coming back again.

2)Window displays were an important part of my grandfather's business. He would let me choose what items would catch customers' eyes. It was fun at the time but I didn't realize at the time that this was what was drawing people into his antique store. Just like my etsy shop. My storefront (photos) have to be clear and crisp. I need them to draw my customers in.

3)The slow down of sales is frustrating. I admit I had a great year last year but December was slower. I was starting to get down on myself. Questioning what I might have done. With our Sears store we had times when sales weren't as high. Summer was slower. November and December were like Christmas every day.  For my shop  January hit and I've had the most sales that my shop has had ever in one month and February is looking like it might be a record too!

4)When sales slow down work on improvements. We painted and cleaned our store when times were slow. We made extra room for the busy times. In the Antique shop we polished silver and cleaned out the clutter. I have taken this and applied it to my own shop. I take stock of my supplies. Cut fabric ribbon ahead of time. Make flowers upon flowers. I take a look at my listings and change tags and rewrite descriptions. If you have a handmade shop you know that this is just the tip of what happens on a daily basis. These thought motivate me. Don't give up on yourself. It is HARD, but it gives me an amazing feeling to know that all this hard work is paying off.

New Shop Items

One of my business goals this year is to introduce new items in the shop. So far I have two new items: the burlap bag and the set of burlap napkin rings. I'm truly happy how each has been received. I've been asked if I had something for the flower girl to carry down the aisle. I wanted it to match the ring bearer pillows that I already have in the shop. Drafting out an idea sometimes takes many hours. I obsess about details. Sometimes so much that I don't ever put it in the shop! Thankfully, I found a unique rustic looking basket that matches my ring bearer pillow.  I'm pleased how this basket looks with one of my flowers. Now I can finally offer flower girl/ring bearer sets.

Here and There

The kids are back in school and I'm figuring out a new routine.  I substitute at our local school.  It's a job that I love.  It's hard to plan out my days since I don't always know ahead of time if I'm working.  On mornings that I don't go to work, I have tried to establish a routine.  After dropping the kids off at school, I try and squeeze in my run.  It is my favorite time to run.  I love feeling the cool breeze on my face.  Then  I come home and take care of laundry and start my to do list for the shop.  I get butterflies when I think about my etsy business.  It makes me so happy!

Our yard is quickly changing.  The leaves are already turning and falling off the trees.  The black walnuts are dropping to the ground.  Pumpkins are ready to be picked.  Now, I need to find a safe place to put them away from the chickens!

The beginning of Jadiecakes

Last fall I bought some vintage bias tape.  I tried different ways to make a flower and ended up with my own little creation of a flower.  I quickly ran out of vintage bias tape and started purchasing it at JoAnn's. Now, here I am with hundreds of my burlap flower pillows sold.  I never thought I'd have pillows in stores across the United States.  I love how I can sit in my home and sew meaningful pillows for people in places I can only dream about.  O.k. before I get all sappy...here is what I made yesterday.  I've been asked to make a couple ring bearer pillows in the past.  I know, what a special honor.  I wanted them to be customizable, elegant, but affordable.  Weddings are expensive enough, right?  So what so you think?

New Items

Here are a few pillows that I made using lace.  I love how the lace looks with the burlap!  Better yet, the vintage lace is from a garage sale.   My mother in-law is always on the look out for sewing supplies for me.  These packages came from a little sewing shop that no longer is in business.  Now, if I could only find more vintage bias tape....

Flowers everywhere!

Just had to take a moment and capture the flower making that had been going on over here.  I've never had so many made at one time.  I'm getting faster.  I love working on custom orders.  The pillows are looking great.  When I finish the order I'll post a picture.  It's been raining here.  Can't wait for the sun to shine!

I'm still here!

I haven't disappeared off the face of the earth!   I've just been swamped.  A good kind of swamped though!  My shop is taking off after some extremely hard work.  I'm soo happy!  I just wish I could clone myself!  Summer vacation is almost here.  Can it be true?!  I have a feeling my sewing machine will be seeing me a lot these hot summer nights.  Hope I can carve out a little time for a posts here and there.  I really miss you all.  Thanks for sticking around!

Fabric in the mail!

I was getting short on fabric.  Such a great feeling.  I've been dying to pick out some new prints!  I spent hours deciding what to get.  I don't spend that much time looking for clothes for myself!  It was such a big decision.  I knew what I loved, but I needed to pick out what I thought all of you would love too!  I created a new listing in my shop for a "create your own burlap pillow".  I think it will make things easier since many lovely customers are requesting custom orders.  Do you like the new prints?  What one is your favorite?

Burlap Pillows

As you might have noticed, I LOVE sewing with burlap.  I almost feel like it is a canvas for my designs.  I can't get enough of the texture that it creates.  Most of my pillows have lots of different materials such as: burlap, cotton, bias tape, chalkcloth, and vinyl.  This week I introduced the chalkcloth pillow.  This way you can create your own message. Simply write with the chalk included and wipe with a damp cloth.  I thought I would take a moment to show a few of my favorites:

Shipping Basket

A couple nights ago, I sat on the floor packaging up some orders for my sweet customers.  I kept having to get up and look for packing supplies.  I could have saved some time if only I had everything that I use to ship items together.  I thought I was organized before.  Ummm...I was not!   My mom gave me a picnic basket that belonged to my grandma the other day.  She wanted to know if I wanted it.  I treasure anything that belonged to my grandma (remember the blue sewing machine I use everyday was hers as well).  I had seen a post on http://www.gussysews.com/ about having shipping supplies in one area.  Gussy was right (not that I would ever doubt her)!  Now, all my supplies sit in the most perfect basket waiting for the next order.

I'm back

Wow, I feel like I can breath again!  I'm back from the craft fair.  I reopened my etsy shop just a bit ago.  I'll be adding a few new items once I get better pictures.  The ones I took the other day are not etsy worthy!  Glad to be back home with the family.  Looking forward to snuggling up with them tonight.

Craft Fair 2011

A while back I was asked if I wanted to be in a craft fair in April.  It was a couple months ago and I told myself that I wasn't going to stress out.  I have quite a bit in stock right now in my shop that I plan on taking out for just that day.  Right now I'm offering free shipping on orders over $30.00 to U.S. addresses.   I do want to make a few other items for the fair (it's 1 week from today).  I plan on adding some Easter bunnies, spring wreaths, button rings, and a few needle felted pillows.  I'll post a preview here next week.  Most importantly I'm going to tell myself not to stress out.  O.k. that will be hard not to do!

Market bags

I made some market bags for my open studio last fall.   I ended up selling all of them.  I received a custom order for two more.  I love the fun prints.  Now, I just need time to make some for me.  I'm placing two in the shop.  Hope your day is a happy one.

New items

Yesterday, I indulged myself by making some badge clips.  I've made these before for craft fairs and friends, but never for Etsy.  Let me just say, I love making these.  I could spend hours contemplating which fabrics to use.  It is really one of my favorite things to do.  Strange right?
Today is fabulous sunny day.  I took a bunch of pictures this morning.  You know you're having a great day when your memory card is full!  I'll be deleting pictures tonight.  I hate doing that.  I always fear pushing the wrong button and loosing the good ones.  Hope your day is happy !

The Owls are almost here

When I reopened my Etsy shop in September, I made four owls.  Since then they have sold  and I knew I had to make more.  Not to mention, I have made four others for gifts.  These are a bit smaller than the others.   Just the right size to ship in a priority envelope.  My favorite part was going through my stash of fabric and seeing what went best.  These would be great for a Valentine's Day gift.  Now, I'm off to put them together so they can fly into my shop!

Shop Update

It's was a busy weekend here.  Halloween costumes were made and etsy orders were packed and sent out.   I am now trying to restock the shop and get ready for a craft fair that is in less than two weeks-yikes!  I've got so many ideas swirling in my head, I'm hoping to get to most of them.  Today I spent most of the day cutting out fabric, burlap and making flowers.  We'll see how much I'll get sewn tonight.  I'm planning on a shop update sometime tomorrow.  Until then, here's what my ironing board looks like.  I love all the scraps of fabric.  There will be a total of six 'home" ornament/door hangers in the update tomorrow along with a few other items.

Open Shop

Toward the end of November, I will be inviting friends and family into my home for an "open shop".  Allisa over at http://www.quiltish.blogspot.com/ offers great tips on pulling off an otherwise nerve wracking event.  I love her idea of leaving a computer on with your etsy shop.  Since, I'm sure some of my guest won't be familiar to Etsy, this will be a great way to showcase what so many of us do.  November should be a busy month for me since I will be doing two craft fairs, an open shop, and keeping my etsy shop full for the holidays.  I hope to learn a lot from this experience and apply it next year so I'm better prepared.  So, if you have a chance, go take a peek at Allisa's blog and shop.  She has lovely items and business tips.
